France funds SPOT

What happened

A working catalogue entry, kept current. Each paragraph is drawn from the publicly documented record.

France's Centre national d'études spatiales formally commits to the Système Pour l'Observation de la Terre — SPOT — as a deliberate hedge against American dominance of civilian Earth-imagery. The first satellite, SPOT-1, launches in 1986; the programme establishes Europe as a credible commercial imagery competitor and lays the political groundwork for Galileo two decades later.

The framing in CNES's own internal memos is explicit: independence from American gatekeeping is the strategic prize, and a profitable commercial business is the means of paying for it. SPOT becomes the template every subsequent national imagery programme studies — quietly, but seriously.
