Tonga agriculture estimation. Every plot, every season.
A satellite-led crop estimation programme for the Kingdom of Tonga — multi-spectral and hyperspectral monitoring of root crops, vanilla and coconut across Tongatapu, Vavaʻu and Haʻapai, plus an archipelago-wide assessment of agricultural potential spanning more than 170 islands, processed inside the kingdom and delivered to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries.

What we run.
The Tonga Agriculture Estimation Project extends the existing sovereign satellite capacity into a routine, plot-level crop monitoring layer for the kingdom's three main island groups. Multi-spectral optical imagery is paired with narrow-band hyperspectral observations tuned for the spectral signatures of taro, cassava, yam, vanilla and coconut — the staples and export crops on which Tonga's rural economy depends.
Imagery is downlinked to the Nukuʻalofa-hosted ground segment alongside the disaster-response feed, processed in-country, and delivered as per-plot estimates of planted area, growth stage, canopy stress and expected yield. Briefs go to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries on a fortnightly cadence, with on-demand tasking available ahead of the cyclone season and during recovery.
The programme also looks beyond the plots already under cultivation. Tonga is an archipelago of more than 170 islands, most of them uninhabited or lightly farmed, and no ground survey could cover them all. Satellite analysis can: soil moisture regimes, vegetation vigour, elevation, salinity exposure and cyclone track history are being combined into an island-by-island picture of where agriculture could work — which islands could carry root crops, which suit coconut or vanilla, and which are best left alone.
The programme is in its early operational phase. The deep-dive narrative — sensor stack, calibration partners and the first full-season yield reconciliation against ground truth — will be published from this page as the customer-side comms timeline allows.
The open record.
Public coverage will be linked from this section as the program matures.
